What is cumberland furnance?

Cumberland Furnace is a small unincorporated community located in the northwestern part of Dickson County, Tennessee, United States. It is named after the Cumberland Iron Furnace, which was once an important ironworks in the area during the mid-19th century.

The Cumberland Iron Furnace was established in 1794 by Colonel Anthony Bledsoe and was owned by several business partners over the years. During its peak, the furnace produced over 500 tons of pig iron per year and was a crucial supplier to the Confederacy during the Civil War.

Today, the Cumberland Furnace State Historic Site preserves the remains of the iron furnace and provides visitors with a glimpse into the history of the iron industry in Tennessee.

Apart from the furnace, Cumberland Furnace is primarily a rural residential area with some small farms and businesses. The community is also home to several churches, a post office, and a few local shops.
